Psalm 51
For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the
prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to
your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my
iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I
sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when
you speak and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at
birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you
desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than
snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed
rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit
within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy
Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant
me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach
transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. 14
Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of
your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will
declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would
bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 The
sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you
will not despise. 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build
up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then there will be righteous
sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight you; then bulls will be offered on
your altar.
Psalm 86
A prayer of David.
1 Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2
Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who
trusts in you. 3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day
long. 4 Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift
up my soul. 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in
love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O LORD ; listen to my
cry for mercy. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you
will answer me. 8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no
deeds can compare with yours. 9 All the nations you have made will
come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. 10
For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. 11 Teach
me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name. 12 I will praise you, O Lord my God,
with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is
your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave. 14
The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life, men
without regard for you. 15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and
gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. 16
Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save
the son of your maidservant. 17 Give me a sign of your goodness, that
my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD , have helped me and
comforted me.
Psalm 103
Of David.
1 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy
name. 2 Praise the LORD , O my soul, and forget not all his benefits
3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4
who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is
renewed like the eagle's. 6 The LORD works righteousness and justice
for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds
to the people of Israel: 8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor
will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins
deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as
the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our
transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his
children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he
knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 As
for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it
no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is
with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children
18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his
precepts. 19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his
kingdom rules over all. 20 Praise the LORD , you his angels, you
mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. 21 Praise the LORD
, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. 22 Praise
the LORD , all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD , O my
soul.
Micah 7
18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the
transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever
but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us;
you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of
the sea. 20 You will be true to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham, as
you pledged on oath to our fathers in days long ago.
Luke 5
11Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you
will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and
followed him.
The Man With Leprosy
12While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was
covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and
begged him, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."
13Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he
said. "Be clean!" And immediately the leprosy left him. 14Then Jesus
ordered him, "Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer
the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
15Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of
people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16But
Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
17One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who
had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were
sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.
18Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him
into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19When they could not find a
way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on
his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are
forgiven." 21The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking
to themselves, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins
but God alone?" 22Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,
"Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23Which is easier:
to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 24But
that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
sins...." He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and
go home." 25Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he
had been lying on and went home praising God. 26Everyone was amazed
and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, "We have seen
remarkable things today."
The Calling of Levi
27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of
Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, 28and
Levi got up, left everything and followed him. 29Then Levi held a
great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and
others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of
the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat
and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 31Jesus answered
them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
Romans 5
Peace and Joy
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we
have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we
have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we
rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also
rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope
does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by
the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6You see, at just the right
time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very
rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might
possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in
this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since we have
now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's
wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were
reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been
reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this
so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we
have now received reconciliation.
Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death
through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned-- 13for
before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into
account when there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the
time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a
command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.
15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the
trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by
the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16Again,
the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment
followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses
and brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man,
death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's
abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life
through the one man, Jesus Christ. 18Consequently, just as the result
of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of
righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19For
just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so
also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
20The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin
increased, grace increased all the more, 21so that, just as sin
reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ephesians 2
Made Alive in Christ
1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in
which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler
of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are
disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying
the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like
the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his
great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with
Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been
saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in
the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming
ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his
kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been
saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.
One in Christ
11Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and
called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that
done in the body by the hands of men)-- 12remember that at that time
you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and
foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the
world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been
brought near through the blood of Christ. 14For he himself is our
peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall
of hostility, 15by abolishing in his flesh the law with its
commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man
out of the two, thus making peace, 16and in this one body to
reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their
hostility. 17He came and preached peace to you who were far away and
peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access
to the Father by one Spirit. 19Consequently, you are no longer
foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of
God's household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21In
him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in
the Lord. 22And in him you too are being built together to become a
dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
